Out For Democracy: 2008 Extreme Makeover

May 10, 2006

If you want to be the Republican candidate for President, you gotta be tight with the religious right. Just ask likely contenders John McCain and Rudy Giuliani. Both these guys are well known as moderates on many issues, but int order to appeal to the Republican base, they're preparing for an extreme makeover.

Rudolph Giuliani signed into law legislation broadly extending recognition of domestic partners in New York City. So why is a fair minded guy like Rudy seen here stumping for Rick Santorum, while Rick Santorum pushes for a vote on the federal marriage amendment? Giuliani's stumping for one of the most homophobic members of Congress is a betrayal of our community.

Senator John McCain once accurately described Jerry Fallwell as an "agent of intolerance", but lately we've seen the two of them jumping into bed together, as McCain agreed to speak at the Falwell's Liberty University.

How far Guiliani and McCain are willing to move to the right to win the Republican Presidential Primary is anybody's guess at this point. But if this past month is any indication, things are not looking good.
