Out For Democracy: Casey v. Santorum

May 25, 2006

Bob Casey has secured his place as the Democratic Candidate running against Rick Santorum in Pennsylvania. Casey won 85 percent of the vote May 16th, showing broad support for his campaign.

Casey was selected months ago by Democratic leaders in DC who believe he has what it takes to defeat Santorum. On that point, they were right. Casey is already leading Santorum in most polls. The downside, however, is that Casey supports overturning Roe v. Wade.

Sadly, this pushed a more progressive and pro-choice candidate, Barbara Hafer, out of the race. The decision resulted in the National Organization for Women (NOW) speaking out against the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee..

At this point, however, Casey is our one chance to defeat Santorum. This is likely why the Capital Region Stonewall Democrats (CRSD) decided to endorse Casey just days before the primary.

"Bob Casey will be a good senator, above and beyond the fact that he will be an improvement over anti-gay Rick Santorum. Bob Casey supports civil unions, opposes the anti-gay 'marriage amendment' and supports a ban on anti-LGBT job discrimination," said CRSD co-chair Ben Turner.

CRSD co-chair Judy Chambers said, "Our group is largely pro-choice, but there are clear differences between Bob Casey and Santorum. Bob Casey supports emergency contraception and funding for family planning, as well as sex education that goes beyond 'abstinence until marriage' limits that are unrealistic and discriminate against
LGBT and questioning youth."

Bob Casey's campaign website is www.bobcaseyforpa.com. More information about the Capital Region Stonewall Democrats is available at www.capitalstonewall.org.
